(a song for music)
Your son lay sleeping in his bed
A mile behind you, you were thinking
He was young for now, but how times flies;
Remembering how you woke and dressed
And kissed your wife before you left
And how your life’s a series of goodbyes
Staring through the tinted glass
You watched the traffic rolling past you
Back toward the place you longed to be;
The light changed and you drove away
And never chose the choice you made
Too late for everything to turn out differently
As if you’d thrown a stone into a pond
And now the moment and the stone are gone
But still the ripples carry on
The birds were singing, you were laughing,
Standing on the corner, happy
Just to have no place to have to go;
You were young and almost free
Still waiting for your destiny
So certain when it came along you’d know
The breeze blew and the sun was shining
Life was fine, and everyone
Was kind, there were no losers at this game;
And then you turned and moved along
The sun went down and life went on
And everything has changed but something’s still the same
As if you threw a stone into a pond
And now the moment and the stone have gone
But still the ripples carry on
I met you accidentally
The same way everybody meets
I didn’t think you’d come along so soon;
We sat together on the grass
And watched the passing strangers walk
Into the glass and laughed beneath the moon
And then I woke up in your arms
And my whole world was charmed, and if
You told me this was love then I’d agree;
Now you might go and I might stay
It matters so much either way
But come what may you’ll always be a part of me
And if you throw a stone into a pond
After the moment and the stone are gone
The ripples carry on

This is beautiful. Do you have a tune for it yet?
(Because if not, I’ve got something I can stick up as soon as I can get my hands on a halfway-decent bit of recording equipment.)

I would be pleased and honored if you’d like to have a go at it! And I do not have a tune… well, not a consistent tune; every time I try to hum along to myself, something unexpected but not entirely satisfactory happens.

It’s not too good quality (I recorded it on a webcam) and the tune may need slightly tweaking, but I hope it leaves a moderately good impression:

Hey! That’s just… really good! Thank you!
Wow.

Thanks! Glad you like it 🙂 I’m still tweaking it so at some point soon there should be a better version, God willing.
At the end of the song it feels like I need to repeat the chorus (as I do in the video) – you could add an extra variant chorus if you want (i.e. I sing the chorus once as written above, then the variant, maybe with an instrumental between) – not that you need to, mind, as the song works fine already.
(I have another song on youtube, which I wrote entirely myself, but it’s… uh… slightly more lowbrow.)

Substandard plumbing is a very important subject! And that song is excellent as well.
I think your idea of chorus / instrumental bridge / alternate chorus would work well. I will mull it over since none of my off-the-top-of-my-head ideas are making me happy…
Tweak away, and let me know when you think it’s ready. Feel free to re-post Stone’s Throw‘s lyrics on YouTube if you like, by the way – I know some people live for site traffic but I’m trying to wean myself. Also, would you be willing to post your chords or tablature, there or here?

Glad you liked the other song as well! I know what you mean about site traffic, it’s weirdly addictive. I’ll try to get something done this weekend; rest assured I’ll inform you as soon as I have anything.
The chords and melody for the 2nd of each pair of verses are in a slight state of flux. This is because the rest of the tune came into my head while reading the post, more or less in a finished state, but only including one verse melody. I realised I needed a second melody, or some variation, for the 2nd of each verse pair; but nothing jumped into my head, so I’m having to mess around and hope it falls into place. I think I’ve got it nailed down though, sorta.
Current chords:
Your [Am] son lay sleeping [C] in his bed,
A [G] mile behind you you were thinking
[Dm] He was young for [F] now but how time [C] flies [G]
(repeat these chords for “Remembering…”, but end with [Am][G] instead of [C][G])
[F] Staring through the tinted glass, you
[Am] Watched the traffic [C] rolling past you
[G] Back towards the [F] place you longed to [C] be [G]
(repeat first set of chords for “The light changed…”, ending with [Am][G])
As [G] if you threw a stone into a [Dm] pond
and now the moment and the [F] stone are gone
but still the ripples [C] carry on ([G])

I had tried a bridge at some point but it didn’t work for me, I think because the verses are so long and leisurely that a bridge felt like a false promise and a delay. But maybe it would work to do something like that at the end? So:
…Now you might go and I might stay
It matters so much either way
But come what may you’ll always be a part of me
Thoughts?
